Planning My Exit from the Rat Race - Ground Zero

The morning sun streamed through the windows of my modest Sydney apartment, illuminating the chaos that had become my life. Stacks of unopened boxes, a motorbike gathering dust in the garage, and an overwhelming sense of “too much” lingered in the air. It was the 6th of January, and while the rest of the world was easing back into work after the holidays, I was staring down the barrel of a tough year ahead. Something had to give.

This blog post is my attempt to make sense of the storm swirling around me and share my journey toward a simpler, freer, and more fulfilling life.

A Slow Start to the Year

January has always been a tricky time in business. The holidays linger in the air, and clients seem to have vanished into thin air. This year feels particularly heavy. Rent is paid—just—but I’m chasing overdue invoices and balancing on the razor’s edge of week-to-week survival. Eighteen months of financial struggle have taken their toll, and I can’t keep treading water. The system I’ve been operating within, both personally and professionally, is no longer working for me. It’s time for a change.

The Exit Plan Begins

Today marks the beginning of my exit plan—a roadmap to escape the relentless grind and carve out a new path. By the end of the year, I aim to be in a better place, both financially and mentally. To achieve this, I’ve started making lists, envisioning the life I want, and identifying what needs to be done to get there.

First up: decluttering. My double garage is a time capsule of a life lived on autopilot. Camping gear I haven’t used in years, work materials from projects long completed, an electronic drum kit gathering dust, and countless other items I’ve hauled from one place to another without a second thought. It’s all got to go.

I’ve committed to selling what I can on platforms like Facebook Marketplace and eBay. The goal is simple: turn clutter into cash, pay down my debts, and lighten my load. With every item sold, I’ll be one step closer to freedom.

Living Light: The Van Life Option

One of the more radical ideas I’m considering is moving into a van for the next 12 months. My rent in Sydney is astronomical—nearly $600 a week—and that’s not counting utilities. The thought of spending another $25,000 this year just to keep a roof over my head feels untenable.

A van could be the answer. For $30,000 to $40,000, I could buy and deck out a van, turning it into a mobile home. The idea of traveling around Australia, exploring its beauty, and cutting down my expenses is incredibly appealing. By the end of the year, I could sell the van, likely recovering much of the initial cost, and walk away with both savings and memories.

Financial Freedom Through Crypto

The cornerstone of my plan is cryptocurrency trading. Over the past few years, I’ve dabbled in the crypto market, learning the ropes and watching its highs and lows. With Bitcoin and altcoins showing promise, I’m committed to honing my trading skills this year. The profits from the current bull run could help me pay off debts and fund my transition to a simpler lifestyle.

This isn’t about getting rich quick—it’s about creating a sustainable way to support myself, free from the constraints of traditional employment. Smart, calculated trading is the key, and I’m determined to get it right.

Holding Onto What Matters

While much of this plan involves letting go, there are some things I’ll hold onto tightly. My music gear is non-negotiable. As a songwriter and musician, these tools are essential to my identity and my happiness. I’ll create a portable setup that can travel with me, ensuring that wherever I end up, my music comes too.

The Bigger Picture

This isn’t just about escaping Sydney or finding a cheaper place to live. It’s about reclaiming my life from a system that feels increasingly oppressive and unsustainable. Australia’s cost of living, coupled with its current economic challenges, has made it nearly impossible to thrive. I want to live somewhere affordable, where I can focus on my passions, regain my health, and rebuild my future.

Whether it’s Southeast Asia, South America, or another corner of the globe, the destination doesn’t matter as much as the journey itself. This is about freedom, simplicity, and rediscovering what it means to truly live.

The Journey Ahead

This blog, much like my YouTube channel, is a way to document my journey. It’s raw, unpolished, and real—just like life. If you’re reading this and feel stuck in your own version of the rat race, I invite you to follow along. Together, we can explore what it means to step off the treadmill and chart a new course.

Today, it starts with lists and a vision. Tomorrow, it will grow into something much bigger. Here’s to trading the system, embracing change, and creating a life worth living.

I have come to a point in my life where I finally have to admit to myself that the country I love and grew up in, Australia, is heading down the wrong path. Sometimes, when you’ve done what you can to make changes and it falls on deaf ears, you’re left with two choices: live with it or make a change in your own life. I’ve decided to make a change.
